An excavator was digging a 2.5 m deep trench into the terraces material and the interstitial sand between the coarse gravel was sampled for OSL dating. The trenching is part of Michaela's project "Rates and Mechanisms of Active Thrusting and Folding in western Taiwan and its Relationship to Coseismic Slip in Large Earthquakes".

Prof. Yue-Gau Chen took the opportunitiy of the open trench to order his students to collect some large boulders for cosmogenic nuclide dating.
